Portal: No Escape
0Filmakers need to learn something from this:
Many of those who know me in person, know that film and games are two of my favorite things in the world. One of the things that has always baffled me is that despite the insane amounts of money and talent pumped into Hollywood these days, the studio system has consistently struggled with quality film adaptations of video games.
Arguably, Portal 2 (2010) is one of the best console games made to date. The Portal series is at the top of my “best games” list along with the Halo, Dead Space, and Mass Effect franchises. These four franchises are fantastic to me as they combine innovative gameplay, rich content, and a balanced narrative to create a mind-blowing and immersive experience.
I can’t help but wonder how these stories (most of which are 8hrs+ of rich gametime), could effectively translate to a quality film of perhaps 2hrs in length. What makes most of these games so immensely enjoyable to me is their unique immersive qualities that take the player into the body of the primary character and the created world.
Studios have tossed around the idea of a Halo film over the last few years. Will a studio attempt to recreate the ringed world in Halo and bring viewers into the heroic adventures of Master Chief?
Given how disappointing film adaptations of games have been in the past, and the fact that they can drive interest away from a quality game franchise, part of me hopes that the studios will stay away from these titles despite how lucrative a successful film endeavor may appear.
On the other hand, another part of me is still curious how it will turn out. Regardless of the measure of quality, I can easily predict that if a Dead Space or Halo movie hits the silver screen, I’ll pay for a ticket – even if the critics slam it. But despite my small dose of financial support which in no way indicates it’s what I want to see more of, the real question remains: can a studio or filmmaker really figure it out and make a quality adaptation for once?
This Portal 2 short by Dan Trachtenberg gives me hope. You may have to have played Portal 2 to really appreciate this, but perhaps not. What we have here is a reasonably higher budget short film that I would argue is a quality adaptation. In under 6 minutes, viewers are carefully brought into this enigmatic world through the character Chell.
What I think makes this a successful short adaptation is selectivity by the filmmaker in terms of what elements are brought from the game into the film and how they are translated. More importantly, these elements define how the film is made and not the other way around. Instead of forcing a game narrative into a typical hollywood structure, Dan Trachtenberg took a sample of the most fantastic elements of the Portal franchise and worked a film around them.
Could this work for 2hrs+? Perhaps not… But it sure is a great demonstration of how one may better translate a game into a film.
There hasn’t been public mention of a Portal film project in development but after working in the film industry and learning how projects are developed, I predict that some major producers out there are inspired enough by Portal: No Escape to start tossing around ideas of a feature length film. I just hope they truly learn learn from this short film.
From a quality and enjoyment perspective, games and films are inherently great for different reasons. I believe, to successfully adapt an innovative game into successful a film, filmmakers need to stop trying to force what is believed to make a successful film onto a game adaptation and instead try focusing what audiences love about the game and adapting how they make a film.
Dinners at LuLu
0Overall Experience:
I am so excited to write about LuLu. This summer, I have gone to dinner at LuLu twice – and you know if I go back to a place more than once, it must be fabulous! The number one thing I have to say about LuLu is the atmosphere is perfect for any occasion. I dined at LuLu once with my step-mom when she was visiting from out of town, and again with my partner and two friends for fun. Both evenings were exquisite and the atmosphere was so much fun. I could easily see myself taking out of town friends to dinner there, going out with local friends for a nice meal out, and even having something like my birthday party at LuLu!
The other thing that makes LuLu fantastic is that the food is served family style. This was especially fun on the evening I dined with 3 others; we were able to sample so many different dishes and really take in a lot from the restaurant.
Great drinks + killer food + wonderful atmosphere = awesomely fabulous fun!

Notes:
A great thing to start with food wise, especially if you are dining with more than one other person, is to hit up the Antipasti. You get three dishes from the section for $18 – definitely enough for four to share! The Burrata and Leek, Goat Cheese and Bacon Tart are sure winners.
If you are feeling hungry, another small plate may be in order before the main but is not necessary. I recommend the Iron Skillet Roasted Mussels; try these once and you will certainly come back and order more.
For entrees, many plates are cooked on LuLu’s wood grill or in the oak fired oven. These result in interestingly prepared flavors, especially with the pizzas and meats. Additionally, each day has a special that is only offered on a particular day of the week; a section that is worthy of more than a glance.
All in all, I loved my visits at LuLu this summer and will surely be back again soon! (I also noticed they have an $18 Prix Fixe Lunch Menu… “soon” may be “very soon” for me)!
Cooking at Home: Atlantic Salmon Filet, Garlic-Rosemary Mashed Potatoes, and Squash
1Dishes:
Atlantic Salmon Filet broiled with soy-garlic glaze and herbs and spices
Garlic-Rosemary Mashed Potatoes with onion and bell pepper
Fresh Yellow Squash with herbs and spices
F-Factor: (F3) Fun
Notes:
Cooking Salmon like this has become second nature to me, as I’m really starting to feel comfortable with it. Broiling it with the many types of glazes I have been creating is a great way to go, and it’s fun every time.
The Rosemary-Garlic Mashed Potatoes were killer. Garlic and rosemary go so well together and when I threw in the onion and pepper to the dish, the whole thing exploded with flavor. I’ve always considered mashed potatoes to be boring…. Until now!
The simple squash on the side was easy and a nice touch… But not exactly necessary. However, since it came in our @farmfreshtoyou delivery box this week, it had to be used.
Overall, I loved everything here and can’t wait to do mashed potatoes again!
Fried Calamari with Roasted Tomato and Pepper Sauce
0Dishes:
Fried Calamari with Fire Roasted Tomato and Pepper Sauce
Simple Salad with Tomato, Cucumber, Prosciutto, and Parmesan Cheese
F-Factor: (F3) Fun
Notes:
Talk about a fast meal! This was my first time making fried calamari and I phoned my Dad (a very talented man in the kitchen btw) and got some helpful advice; he warned me about how fast calamari cooks when fried and also explained how less is more when it comes to the flavor of the sauce to accompany the calamari. With frying the squid, I did some test runs before frying my full batch and noticed that even 30 seconds of extra cooking turns a potentially delicious piece into a complete rubbery failure. The main take away I found is to figure out the exact ideal time, pay attention, and stick with it. So pleased I got that advice beforehand!
Second to cooking the squid appropriately, the sauce/flavor to go with the fried calamari is of paramount importance. I decided to go with a fire roasted tomato base with fresh peppers, onions, and a little basil. Sounds a little on the simple side but it worked very well. And of course, I just had to throw in a little lemon on on the fried calamari to add that wonderful kick most of us love!
As a side to go with the Fried Calamari, I prepared a simple salad with cucumber, tomato, parmesan cheese, and some prosciutto (still have so much left from our 4th of July “doggie bag” and just had to use it)!
All in all, this was a super fun and tasty meal – and I must mention my personal excitement for a successful first attempt at cooking squid!
P.S. Even though none of the recipe instructions called for it… I made sure to put in plenty of garlic where it fit
Black Cod with Tomato wrapped with Prosciutto
0Dishes:
Prosciutto Wrapped Black Cod marinated in garlic olive oil and herbs de provence broiled with tomato and a garlic-soy Glaze
Sautéed Brussel Sprouts with Bacon
Roasted Red Bell Peppers wraps with sautéed mushroom and sprinkled with parmesan cheese
F-Factor: (F4) Fabulous
Notes:
The concept behind this meal was trying to do something on the healthy side with touch of naughty ingredients. Aside from the bacon and prosciutto not one unhealthy ingredient was used. The fact that I’m rating this dinner as an F2 is not because it was terrible by any means – it came out perfectly- it just wasn’t anything special.
However, for being a more basic meal, the fabulous Penzeys Spices Sanjay and I recently received as a gift sure gave it a bit of flare. It’s interesting to experience how much more quality spices can accent a meal when you prepare something more simple. This realization is making me think that with the right spices, anything can taste great!
The lesson I have learned here is that cooking can sometimes be all about the spices!
- However, prosciutto and bacon certainly help –
Rosemary and Dijon Mustard Lamb: Cooking at Home
0
Dishes:
Rosemary and Dijon Mustard Rack of Lamb infused with Garlic with Fresh Herbs and Spices
Spinach Salad with Baby Tomato, Cucumber, Feta Cheese, and Sliced Prosciutto
F-Factor: (F4) Fabulous
Notes:
I have been loving cooking lamb lately. After mastering the technique of searing the spices on the back of the lamb rack prior to baking, I really feel I can bring some extra strength to the exciting flavors of such a great protein. This particular lamb dish is the best I have ever done, and I must say it was somewhat experimental. Prior to cooking the lamb, I marinated it in in a little olive oil with garlic, rosemary, and dijon mustard. The rosemary and mustard are the key ingredients here as, when combined, they create a profound and unique aromatic and flavorful experience. As as those of you who have been following my food blog for some time, you know the garlic just had to be there – habit I guess – yet it works every time!
The Spinach Salad was the perfect side to balance with the powerful Rosemary and Dijon Mustard Rack of Lamb. Over the weekend, I had the fantastic opportunity to spend the 4th of July holiday with family where, in addition to some fantastic times and fabulous food, I got to take home what I am estimating is at least a pound of fine prosciutto, yum! I simply sliced the prosciutto up a bit and served it room temperature with the salad as described above with an italian dressing and it was hit.
Greystone: Dinner
1Venue: Greystone Steakhouse
Overall Experience:
To some extent, I’m a little biased towards loving Greystone as my family is a part owner but I have had only fabulous experiences at this wonderful restaurant over the years in San Diego. Up to today, I have focused my food blog on either what I cook at home or what I enjoy in the SF area but this restaurant is so great it is worth mentioning. Whether you live in San Diego or travel there in the future, you must make a stop for an evening at Greystone.
Greystone is a beautiful split-level restaurant built in what used to be a cinema. The depth of the venue and multiple dining atmospheres (from a patio, to a mezzanine, a cozy main floor, and bar area) remind me of the trendy open-loft style restaurants which have been become signature in the SoMa district of SF. All areas have a unique feel yet all are visible from one another.
I’m not going to going to list all the dishes our 8+ party ordered but will say the bone-in Ribeye was simply phenomenal. To accompany our meals, we enjoyed a couple bottles of True Companion from Vinair Wines – a great family wine company based in napa that produces the highest quality wines for the price. Check out the Vinair Wines website to learn more!

You truly can’t go wrong with anything on the menu at Greystone. They get only the best meat around and the new chef creates magnificent plates. When you visit, make sure to accent your meal with a nice bottle of wine and never be shy to ask one of the highly knowledgable waiters for recommendations.
Also don’t forget to check out Vinair Wines and feel free to ask me any questions if you would like to learn more about the wines!
